What I absolutely love about this shop...
... is the people!
I am so blessed, getting to know the people on all sides of our transactions: the consignors, the donors, the browsers, and the buyers. (Am I forgetting anyone? Oh, the shop helpers! Bless them!)
Case in point: This little waterfall vanity brought many blessings:
~ It was a delight to meet the woman who brought it in to be sold; I learned so much from her experience as an interior designer.
~ It was enjoyable to have it in the store, to admire the design and the workmanship.
~ It was (ahem) strengthening to wheel it out every day for our Sidewalk Sale.
~ It was amusing to hear so many shoppers comment, "My mother had one just like this!"
~ Finally, it was a true pleasure to meet the warm-hearted young lady who bought it today; in addition to being a lover of vintage furniture, she is a beekeeper who may soon be providing us with more delightful bee products for our shoppers.
This is the transfer of material goods working well, bringing people together. I'd just been asking the Lord last week, what does commerce represent in the heavenlies? I understand that government, family, the arts, and education, among other aspects of life, foreshadow what we will find in heaven. But buying and selling?
Maybe this is part of the answer, and certainly seems to fit the pattern we are seeing:
the purpose of participating in the marketplace is to learn to know God (through joys and difficulties!), enjoy life, and build relationships.
But unlike the aspects of life that are reflections of heaven and will be further explored there, maybe commerce is like faith in that it is only needed in this life.
