Petite writing desks on a budget

We have two girls' writing desks for economical young ladies.
Both have 4 drawers and are ~43" wide x ~17" deep x ~30" tall:

French Provincial style labeled "Bonnet by Sears", wood and pressed wood
(oops, top 2 left-hand drawers are reversed in the photo)
and
Shabby Chic, wooden, white writing desk

I've updated this post after sitting at one of the desks and realizing that, although the height is standard, the leg room under the drawer is too short for an adult!

You can't have this centagenarian armoire...

...unless your ceilings are at least 8'3" tall.

That should give you sufficient room to bring it in sideways through a standard door,
then tilt it up, passing through its longest dimension on the way to upright,
where it will stand tall at 7'11.75" x 51" wide x 22" deep.

Open the door, and the memory-laden fragrance of aged fir wood greets you,
taking you back to grandmother's pantry on the farm, or an old cabin by the lake.

Being around such a large, old piece gets my imagination going. Who built it? When? Where? It's not fancy, not ornate, not fine wood, but good, clear fir, finished with a dark lacquer. It's utilitarian, but the construction is finer than a plain box; there's craftsmanship and design. There's a metal closet rod; if you are tall you can reach it! There are 2 full-width drawers at the base; if you are strong, you can open them!

We don't have the full history, but this wardrobe has obviously been moved around a few times in the past century, picking up some dings and smudges along the way. Structurally, it is in great shape, and has great presence.

Where can you imagine it being used for the next 100 years?

A true Papa Bear's chair...a large and soothing rocker

Large wooden rocking chair, a true "Papa Bear Chair", this one has a great rock to it.

We've found that rocking chairs each have their own feel; you need to find a good match for you, so come try this for a test rock and see if it's "just right" for you! If you can bring a little one to hold, so much the better :^)


This one has a few scratches, but it's in good shape and has great style! I love the gold banding, the Old World stenciling, and the little spheres set in the back and as the finials.

To chic or not to chic?

The world is divided into 2 camps: those who divide the world into 2 camps and those who abhor such over-simplifications!

Still, there are definitely 2 distinct attitudes about painting furniture, and folks do seem to line up in one camp or the other: those who paint wooden furniture, and those who see that as sacrilege. 

With furniture like this, I think it's ok to go either way for these 3 reasons: the light fruitwood does not have a particularly memorable grain, the current finish is quite worn, and the structure is decent. An excellent candidate for a shabby chic transformation, which could, however, be scrubbed up just a bit and enjoyed as it is.

The chairs were made by Lenoir Chairs, which was a mid-quality furniture mfg.
started in 1926 by one of the Broyhill brothers and later merged into the Broyhill brand. These may be from the 1960s, judging from the flecked finish. They were re-upholstered about 6 months ago.

The table is 43.5" diameter plus two 18" leaves. The table, which has no manufacturer's tag, and the chairs have subtle differences in style, and may have been purchased separately,
although the pieces do go well together.

Victorian era Eastlake parlor chair

Charming antique chair. The Eastlake-style hand-carving dates this chair to late 1800s. The round seat is 24" diameter. The front legs have small wheels.

Here we've set a small cup with a tealight on the existing socket, but you could use a standard-base decor light bulb.
